A Greenwood County-based lumber company plans to create 15 jobs as part of a $500,000 expansion of its manufacturing facility, state and local economic development leaders announced Tuesday.

Ackerson-Stevens Inc., a lumber company and manufacturer of custom molding and flooring accessories, is adding equipment and renovating a building at One Quality Way in Ware Shoals to increase its production capacity, company president Ralph Campbell said.

“The building came up for sale, so we thought this would be a great time to do our expansion,” Campbell said. “We’ve done a lot of remodeling to it, with a new roof and wiring.”

Officials, including Gov. Henry McMaster, welcomed news of the company’s continued investment in the Lakelands. “The fact that ASI has chosen to expand in South Carolina and continue to invest in our people is something for our state to be proud of. This sends a signal to the whole world that our South Carolina is open for business,” Gov. Henry McMaster said in a statement.

Heather Simmons Jones, CEO of the Greenwood Partnership Alliance, said Monday that ASI’s announcement continues a strong growth period for the area. “While we are always happy to see existing industries grow in Greenwood County, it is an especially good day when we can reach into the outlying areas of the county to create jobs. It’s a great day for Ware Shoals and northern Greenwood County,” Simmons Jones said.
