Dempsey Wood Products, a maker and provider of pine and domestic hardwood lumber and wood chips, has announced it will invest $7 million in its Orangeburg plant, which should create 28 jobs over the next five years.
The $7 million will be invested in new dry kilns, a planer mill, and other upgrades to its sawmill, reported Orangeburg news The Times and Democrat.
“It will give us some new markets, will diversify our markets and make us more efficient in converting the raw material to the finished product,” owner Ronnie Dempsey said.
Orangeburg County Council approved tax incentives for the expansion, including fee-in-lieu of taxes and joint county industrial park incentives. Fee-in-lieu of taxes incentives allow industries to pay a fee based on lower tax assessment than the standard 10.5 percent.
Last year, The Times and Democrat says the company brought lumber drying and planning in house, and increased its kiln-dried capacity. Dempsey Wood Products serves the Southeast pine and hardwood market. The company employs 80.
